How do I format the title of a book or an article inside of my assignment?

Answer

Titles of sources like books and articles are not required inside of an assignment. However, you may wish to refer to a title if you think it is relevant to the argument or point you are trying to make.

Follow these guidelines when using titles inside your assignment (note: do not use these rules for references).

Use italics and sentence case to format the title of a book, report, webpage, or other stand-alone work, e.g.:

Margaret Atwood's novel, The testaments, is a sequel to her earlier work, The handmaid's tale.

Use "quotation marks" and Mixed Case for the title of an article published in a journal, magazine, or newspaper, e.g.:

In "Consensus on Consensus: A Synthesis of Consensus Estimates on Human-Caused Global Warming," Cook et al. (2016) survey published, peer-reviewed research addressing the causes of climate change.
