How to use Bow Valley College streaming services?

Answer

Bow Valley College Streaming Service

The Bow Valley College Copyright Office and the RGO Library and Learning Commons are pleased to announce the Bow Valley College Streaming Service. The Service legally digitizes video for online course distribution.

Background

Instructors can play all or part of any film in class for educational purposes. However, it is illegal to break a technical protection measure (TPM or digital lock) on a video to make a digital copy for online distribution. Using Copyright Act educational exceptions (sections 29.5 and 30.01), the BVC Streaming Service legally digitizes DVDs and Blu-rays into streaming videos for courses and course design.

Questions about the service's legal and technical foundations can be directed to: [copyright@bowvalleycollege.ca](mailto:copyright@bowvalleycollege.ca).

Conditions

· Streams must be for an educational purpose and are made at the request of an instructor for use in an individual course or as part of a course design.

· Access to the stream should be restricted to the students in the course it has been made for. Therefore, only provide the link in a password-protected course platform such as D2L.

· If a film is already available in a Library or college-licensed streaming database, that source should be used in your course.

· Any legally issued DVD or Blu-ray can be used as a source – a copy you own, or one borrowed from a friend or any library. Other sources must be first approved by the Copyright and Intellectual Property Officer.

· All or part of a video may be converted. Consult with the Library about options and timelines for creating clips.

· A link to the Library-hosted stream is provided to you to post for student access in the course D2L.

· Access to the stream ends 30 days after the last evaluation in the course and must be renewed in subsequent terms.

Process

1. Drop off the DVD or Blu-ray at the Library circulation desk, providing your name and the course number the stream will be used in.

2. Alternately, email a request for a DVD or Blu-ray found in the Library collection to be converted to a stream.

3. Streams will normally be available the following Monday. If a shorter timeline is required, please consult with the Library.

4. A link to the stream will be provided to the instructor to post in D2L.
