How do I use generative AI like ChatGPT ethically?
Answer
How can I use generative AI ethically?
You are expected to complete the work assigned to you so the instructor can see what you have learned in the course. Ask yourself these three questions before using a generative AI resource/tool:
- Does using gen AI for your assignment fit with the values of academic integrity (honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage?)
- Is the resource/tool allowed by your course instructor or program?
- Would you feel nervous if your instructor knew you were using gen AI?
The library recommends using a generative AI chatbot like ChatGPT as a part of academic research in three ways:
- Brainstorming - narrowing your research focus
- Background research - ask a generative AI chatbot to provide a research topic overview or summary
- Finding search terms - ask a generative AI chatbot to provide a list of search terms to use in search tools like the library catalogue
Do NOT use a generative AI chatbot to write any part of your assignment and submit it as your own work! This is a violation of the college's Academic Integrity policy. It is plagiarism!
Ask your instructor about all other uses of generative AI.
When you use generative AI for writing tasks, say that you did!
- The library recommends being transparent whenever you use a generative AI tool. This means telling your reader (in this case, your instructor) that you used a tool as part of your assignment.
- Include a statement in your assignment that says:
- The tool that you used
- The specific task that the tool helped you complete
For example:
I used ChatGPT to write the outline of this assignment.
