How do I use hanging indents to format my reference page?

Answer

There are two ways to use hanging indents to format your References page:

  1. with keyboard shortcuts (desktop app only)
  2. with the paragraph menu (Office 365 & desktop app)

You can apply hanging indents to your references:

  • before you start typing.  Set your line spacing to double. Use a keyboard shortcut or the paragraph menu (below) to set your hanging indents. Your references will be formatted as you type.
  • after you start typing.  Highlight your references.  Set your line spacing to double. Use a keyboard shortcut or the paragraph menu (below) to set your hanging indents.  (Tip: clear all other formatting first.)

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Ctrl T (PC computer)
  • Command T (Apple computer)

Paragraph menu

Click on the arrow in the lower right corner of the paragraph menu.

  2. In the box to the right, click on the up or down arrow and set the hanging indent to 1.27cm or .5 inches
  3. Spacing should be set at 0
