What is a narrative essay?
Narrative essays tell the reader about an event, interaction, or experience. It's like writing a story! This also means that the narrative must have a purpose. This purpose is like a thesis in other essays. There are other important traits a narrative essay must include. Such as a clear point of view, concise language, paragraphs in a logical order (most common is chronological order), and the first-person pronoun “I” is used. The essay uses the common five-paragraph structure.
Introduction:
Using a strong hook sentence will make the reader more engaged in the essay. This paragraph will also include the setting and thesis.
Three Body Paragraphs:
A topic sentence is used to introduce the main idea of the body paragraph. Make sure to develop and connect details to the topic and thesis. It is important to provide transitions from one paragraph to the next.
Conclusion:
This paragraph will connect the details of the narrative to the overall theme of the essay. Try to end the narrative in an impactful way, to ensure the purpose of the narrative is clear.
Citations/References:
Sometime narrative essays will require citations, used to demonstrate academic honesty. Most writing assignments require a citation/references list in APA citation style.
