How do I reference and cite an act or other kind of Canadian government legislation?

Answer

APA does not provide guidance on citing legal material. The following suggested format is based on citation practices used by the Canadian Legal Information Institute. Legislation is made up of Statutes (Acts), Charters, Regulations and Treaties.

 Create a reference

     Template

Title of legislation, Source + Year, chapter, section(subsection), URL/Publisher.

      Example

Workers’ Compensation Act, RSA 2000, c W-15, s18(1), http://www.qp.alberta.ca/documents/Acts/W15.pdf

 Create a citation

     Template

(Title of legislation, Year of publication)

(Title of legislation, Year of publication, para. #)

      Example

(Worker's Compensation Act, 2000)

(Worker's Compensation Act, 2000, para. 8)

See the APA 7 website for more information.
