How do I reference and cite Canadian case law?

Answer

APA does not provide guidance on citing Canadian case law.  The following suggested format is based on citation practices used by the Canadian Legal Information Institute, and the information provided in the APA manual for American cases and court decisions.  Please note that the case name is italicized for both the reference and the citation.

 Create a reference

     Template

Title or name of case, Year Court Number, https://www....

      Example

Richard Curtis Troppmann v The City of Edmonton, 2019 ABELARB 64, https://canlii.ca/t/j12f6

 Create a citation

     Template

(Name v Name, Year)

(Name v Name, Year, p. #)

      Example

(Richard Curtis Troppmann v The City of Edmonton, Assessment and Taxation Branch, 2019)

(Richard Curtis Troppmann v The City of Edmonton, Assessment and Taxation Branch, 2019, para. 4)

See the APA 7 website for more information.
