Q. How do I reference an encyclopedia or dictionary entry from a library ebook?

Answer

Reference for entry without individual authors:

Example:

Neuroplasticity. (2016). In J.L. Longe (Ed.), The Gale Encyclopedia of Psychology (3rd ed., Vol. 2, pp. 810-811). Gale.

In-text citation for entry with no author:

("Title of entry", Year, p. #).

("Title of entry", Year).

Example:

("Neuroplasticity", 2016, p. 810)

Reference for entry with individual authors:

Last, A. A., Last, B. B., & Last, C.C. (Year). Title of entry. In A. Editor (Ed.), Title of Online Encyclopedia (# ed., Vol. #, pp. #-#). Publisher.

Example:

Pham-Kanter, G., Davidson, T., AM, & Odle, T. G. (2020). Substance abuse and Dependence. In B. Narins (Ed.), The Gale Encyclopedia of Public Health (2nd ed., Vol. 2, pp. 1045-1051). Gale.

In-text citation with author:

(AuthorLast, Year, p. #)

(AuthorLast, Year)

 Example:

Tips:

  • If a volume does not have its own title, include the volume number in parenthesis without italics.
  • If there is no volume, leave this blank.
  • Download the .pdf to determine the page number of the entry in the ebook (look for a downward arrow); If there is no PDF, leave the page range blank.
