Can I use URL shorteners in my citation or reference?

Answer

When a DOI or URL is long or complex, you may use a shortened version of that URL in your reference as long as it links to the correct location.

For DOI numbers, you can use the shortDOI service provided by the International DOI Foundation located at http://shortdoi.org. Simply enter a DOI number into the box provided and click submit. If you entered a valid DOI number, the site will provide you with a shortened URL that will link to the same location as the DOI number you entered. You can then use this shortened URL in your reference.

To shorten other types of lengthy URLs, various online services exist such as TinyURL. (https://tinyurl.com/) Information about services like this can be found on their respective websites.
