Q. How do I cite and reference a film?

Director(s) last name, Initial. (Director). (Year). Title of film in italics and sentence case [Film]. Production company.

Lucas, G. (Director). (1977). Star wars episode IV: A new hope [Film]. Lucasfilm.

In-text citation (paraphrase):

(Director(s) last name, year)

In-text citation (direct quote):

(Director(s) last name, year, timestamp)

*timestamp in 00:00 format or X 00:00

(Lucas, 1977)

  • You do not need to specify the format you watched a film on. However, if additional information is necessary (for example, if you watched an extended edition or a special feature on a certain DVD release), format it like this: [Film; special edition DVD]
  • If you are directly quoting a film, include a timestamp in your in-text citation. Format it like this: (Lucas, 1977, 1:38:54)
